So I received my historical plates for my Volvo 740; now it's time to plan out the mods; so the car is gonna be used as a race car.
What kind of racing you ask?
What ever I can get this car into! So autocross for sure, cause that's fun, and easy to do.
I'm thinking rally cross as well, cause cheap tire change will do for that.
Now here's where I need your help opponaut's what we should I do to get into different types of racing (crazier the ideal, the more likely I will do it!)
Roll cage is a good start...

Weight is the enemy. Weight up high is even worse. Step one is to remove all windows...less frontal area too! Here's my handy weight loss guide: http://oppositelock.jalopnik.com/automotive-wei…

Are you going to be street driving this or putting it on a trailer?
Throwing a cage in right off the bat with throw you into a stupid Auto X class, unless you're ready for that.
What driving experience do you have?

Rally. Because RWD rally cars are awesome, and Volvos are built like tanks - it can handle it. Bonus awesome points for racing a wagon!

Agreed. I hate to be anti-safety, but a harness bar would be fine for autox. Rallycross I'd want a 6 point in it..probably with swingout doorbar.

I say build it for rallycross from the get go, and then slowly work your way into the returning rallysprint series and stage rally.

Sorry, I might be making assumptions, but the first mod is to the driver. Seat time is probably what you need first. You won't need a roll cage in that car at autocross or rallycross, and unless you're planning on going to lemons, there are bigger safety things to worry about. Things like the fact that you're going to try to push a 25-30 year old car to its limits off road. What do you know about the suspension? Is it original? Were the springs and struts replaced? Are any of the mounting points rusty? I rebuilt my entire suspension on my MR2 to be safe, so I should have been fine, right? I put some better tires on it, and ripped a hub and bearing off. At autocross. I'd focus on making sure that the suspension and chassis are solid first. Also, while you're at it (again, unless Lemons) you can uprate all of the components you have to replace! Get better springs, adjustable dampers, good brake pads, etc. I'd also replace every fluid in the car including the brake fluid, and transmission/diff oil. Good luck! Cheap old project race cars require alot of effort, but it's totally worth it.

Yeah. Also street driving around in a fully caged car isn't always the best idea. You then have to wear harnesses, which aren't street legal...

idea is to keep it barely street legal so that I can get it to and from track, I don't want to haul it behind my v70R,
I've auto crossed all this year, the idea I was going for was to have a car summit point would let on the track Af they need a roll cage
Just auto cross, some "special" training from my day job I can't really get Into and a lot of kart time at summit point and else where

yes I love the rally aspect I'm hoping to do some really like rally stage racing, like the mentioned return of rallysprints series!
And I only race wagons!

I agrre suspension and the simple stuff is where it's at when it comes to prepping for a race; but that's not nearly as fun to talk about as like gaint spoilers and alike!

yeah Im planning on doing rally-X and what ever else I can enter this In this upcoming year, so roll cage just to be safe.

Now you're giving me similar ideas. That's dangerous.
I, too, race wagons.

So these are my thoughts...
You need to focus and decide one area, and build the car for that. You can have a car that does one thing well, or many things so-so.
Seat time is important. Auto cross doesn't need anything special. Depending on the racing series, you could very well need a special license.

how pissed are people when you beat them in that?
I know my v70R would piss off every one I beat in autocross (a few focus st's and a vw GTI )
Where do you rally-X?

I kinda want to be so-so in all fields though, my thought is, "how do I know what I really like til I try it all?"
Also yeah, if I need to get a license I'm out; way out of the budget!

Summit Point only requires a roll bar (not cage) for convertibles for track days.

I though they had some events you needed a roll cage for, (could be completely wrong thought its been known to happen time to time

If you don't know yet and building it as a track toy, you will have a very good all around car that's fine for autoX, rallyX, and track days (bro) by just rebuilding the suspension (including bushings, ball joints, and such), lightening it as much as possible, and getting some good tires for it. I wouldn't get lowering springs because rally, but some good Koni yellow adjustable struts will do wonders, and it should be tough enough. For a track day, you'll want to make sure that you at least have some good track pads and high quality brake fluid, otherwise you'll get brake fade really fast. You might also want to upgrade the brake lines to braided stainless. You might want to keep extra control arms, axles, hubs, and bearings around for rallyX. On the bright side, it's a wagon, so you can bring it all with you!

Racing events, yes, but for those you would need to have a license anyway. It's also the role of the organizer or organizer's sanctioning body at that point, and they pretty much all require roll cages for anything wheel to wheel.

I was checking out cage from that same place today. If you decide to buy one please post some installation photos. I'm interested what kind of quality they are offering. The shipping price to here might still be too much.
Our rallicross looks quite different. And Volvos have been essential part of rallicross here for decades. Most teams use Volvo engines whatever chassis they are using. Here's how ours look (in this class all cars are RWD despite their looks).

yeah, I think I would feel better having a car with a cage that's this old, but I think your right about the racing events, needing a license now that I'm thinking about it tho

I've run with NER SCCA a few times. I don't have the wagon anymore. Right now I have a BRZ, which is still new enough that I'm hesitant to risk scratching the paint.

This would be my first roll cage ever so I'm not sure if I will be a good gauge of quality and ease of install, but when I get it (could be a little while) I'm make sure to post something on OPPO

Yes, the cage could be abbreviated in the back. Just the hoop behind you and a couple bars going down to the suspension mounts. if it has to remain slightly street legal, I'd put as much plexi in it as possible...barring the windshield maybe. All that glass is really heavy. Taking door bars out of all but the drivers door possible as well. Eject the dash and interior. you're going to have a fun time. Let us know what you can get the weight down to.
